Dearest Penn Jersey Roller She-Devils Roller Derby fans,
Hello and how are you? Tuffy Muffy (#5), here, your faithful correspondent from that rough and tumble old-school league, the Penn Jersey She-Devils! I’m that friendly buzz in your ear, reminding you what events you want to be the first to know about; so you can brag about being on the inside of the roller derby world to your friends, of course!
First of all, let’s recap March’s intense season opener, the Shamrock Shakedown between the Sadistic Sweethearts and the Dishonor Roll. The Sweethearts came out triumphant 49-23 over the Dishonor Roll, but trust me, it was no easy road to victory. Both teams had a number of rookies skating in their first league match-up, myself included. I thought of many of us as feral beasts trying to claw through the pack in any way possible, leading to multiple visits to the penalty box and 2 girl-fights that stopped play entirely! The refs had their work cut out for them, but rest assured, they only awarded legitimately earned points! I definitely saw members from the Fallen Angels watching closely and taking notes for April’s game. Check our website for stats and pictures from the Shakedown. www.shedevilsrollerderby.com
If you didn’t attend the Shakedown, PJSD’s Spring BREAK ’08 between the Dishonor Roll and the Fallen Angels, is a must-see! The Dishonor Roll is sure to be fierce as they battle back after March’s game and they may even change up their strategy to throw the Angels a curveball. The other thing to look for at our April game is the gang from Ride For Dime Philly. Ride For Dime (RFD) is an annual charity ride and concert in memory of musician Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott, along with Jeff Thompson, Nathan Bray, and Erin Halk. www.ridefordime.com The proceeds from Spring BREAK’s 50/50 will go to RFD and they will be in attendance to talk about their big concert coming up to benefit Little Kids Rock. www.littlekidsrock.org All this and more will go down on Saturday, April 26th at the International Sports, Skating, and Fun Centre in Mount Laurel, NJ. Doors at 7:30pm, get there early for the best rink-side seating! www.intsports.com/mtl
To prep for April’s showdown, come visit us at Philly’s Tattoo Arts Convention from April 18-20th at the Sheraton Philadelphia City Center Hotel. Tattoos are to roller derby what cookies are to milk! Get inked from some of the area’s most talented artists and say hi to your favorite She-Devils while you’re at it! We’ll have tickets for the game, merch, tattoos to show off, and a healthy dose of sass. www.tattooedkingpin.com
Finally, while you’re marking your calenders, save Friday, May 2nd. The She-Devils are pairing up with the party planners of Emerge to celebrate the Equality Forum www.equalityforum.com and benefit the Sapphire Fund www.sapphirefund.org! This year’s Emerge party is set to be the biggest yet with a whole line-up of bands, DJ Cozmic Cat, and even comedienne Marga Gomez! The party goes from 9pm-3am at Transit Nightclub, 600 Spring Garden, Philadelphia. Purchase tickets at http://emerge.sapphirefund.org
Now that your April is all planned out, call up your friends, brag a little, then be kind and invite your friends along! I, personally, can’t wait to see all you fine people out!
Sincerely,
Tuffy Muffy #5
P.S. If you’d like to request a She-Devils presence at your event, simply contact us with information about your event, the date, and the time. We’d be happy to show up and work the crowd at your happy hour, dance party, gig, business luncheon, inaugural address, etc. events@shedevilsrollerderby
