Red Devils Trail In Roller Derby

The Brooklyn Red Devils, knocked out of second place in the National
Roller Derby standings by the Bay Bombers in the past three weeks at the
Oakland Exposition Building, will try to get back in the running
Thursday night.

Trailing the Bombers eight games to four, the Devils need three
victories to leave town ahead of the local club. The Bombers, on the
other hand, want at least a split so they’ll be in position to challenge
the league-leading New York Chieftains in a two-week series here
starting a week from Thursday night.

Bombers, Chiefs In Title Tilt

The New York Chiefs meet the Bay Bombers for the Roller Derby
championship tonight at the Cow Palace after both posted opening round
wins las night.

The Chiefs took the opener 30-29 over the Northwest Cardinals. The
Bombers won their berth in the finals with a 39-31 decision over the New
England Braves before 11,133 fans.

Canadians Lose To Bombers, 37-11

The Bay Bombers wrapped up their Roller Derby series with the Canadian
Nationals with a 37-11 win at the Cow Palace last night.

In between periods, Bomber coach Charlie O’Connell defeated National
coach George Vogt in a six-lap match race.

The match was the last for team captain O’Connell at the Cow Palace who
is retiring at the end of this season.

The Bombers open a series tonight at the Kezar Pavilion against the
Midwest Pioneers starting at 7.

Bombers Score Series Sweep

STOCKTON - The Bay Bombers closed out their league Roller Derby season
by thumping the Northeast Braves at the Civic Auditorium to make it a
clean sweep of the three-game series.

Mike Gammon and his wife Judy McGuire topped the Bombers with nine
points apiece.

Next for the Bombers will be in the International Roller Derby League’s
1969 championship playoffs at the Coliseum Arena Friday night. The
Bombers face the Northwest Cards at 8:45 while the Northeast Braves and
the Midwest Pioneers square off at 6:30 in semi-final matches.

O’Connell’s Last Derby Play Slated

Charlie O’Connell, who IS Roller Derby to many people, ends his playing
career this weekend as he tries to lead the Bay Bombers to a 10th
championship.

O’Connell, the 19-year veteran, will become general manager of the new
Chief franchise, which will play in Madison Square Garden, effective
Oct. 1.

The Bombers start the 23rd derby championship tonight at 8:30 against
the Jolters at the Cow Palace. The Red Devils and Braves meet at 6:30
p.m. in the other semi-final match.

The championship g a m e will be played at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow in the
Oakland Arena, preceded by the thirdplace game at 6:30 p.m.

The Bombers whipped the Jolters 41-39 last night in the final league
game of the season behind Tony Roman’s nine points at Sacramento
Memorial Auditorium. But the Jolters look the series 2-1.

(Note: Missed putting together yesterday’s ‘Today in Roller Derby
History” after posting articles for several days about the September 22,
1957 matchrace between Annis Jensen and Ken Monte. The Oakland Tribune
of September 23, 1957 made mention of the fact that Annis Jensen won
that matchrace.)

Love reading these old clips. Great fan of old school roller derby i.e. O’Connell, Monte,Foster,Dave “Cowboy”Battersby, Lou Donovan, Dewitt Quarles,”Wild Bill” Runnells, the Atkinsons, John “Porky” Parker, etc. Great Stuff !
