Chesapeake Roller Derby is a co-ed, charity league. We skate under the OSDA rule set. We are based in Baltimore and will play our home games in Westminster.

We currently practice on Tuesday nights and will soon start on Thursday nights as well. We practice in Baltimore at the Roosevelt Recreation Center in Hamden (1221 W 36th St, Baltimore, 21211) on Tuesday from 7PM to 9PM, and at the Skateland Orchard (8855 Orchard Tree Lane Towson, Maryland 21286) on Thursdays from 7:30PM to 9:30PM.

We don’t have tryouts, you just have to start coming to practices and skate with us, but let us know prior so we can expect you. If you already have the skating skills for WFTDA you have the skills for OSDA.

We do not charge dues but we do ask each skater to contribute for our practices by organizing and/or attending our fundraisers. We also accept individual donations, so far people have ranged from $7 to $50, with a $20 average per month. We intend to drop contributions altogether once we have sponsors that will pay for our league expenses.

The International Sports Center rocked on October 24th 2009 when the hometown Penn Jersey She Devils hosted a game against the visiting Man’s Ruin team from Chester, NY.

This game saw the return to action of local favorites Lucky Luciano, Sloppy Jo, and Deuces Wild from injuries and rookie standout Hellanor Rollsevelt who had scheduling conflicts the past couple games. Their return was most noticeable. This was one of the best games I’ve ever witnessed in over 2 years of following the OSDA.

In a very defensive game, the PJSD’s defeated MR by a score of 59-31. The score does not reflect how close the game seemed to everyone in attendance. The blocking very hard with standout performances by PJSD’s Lucky Luciano and MR’s Tienty Deville and Tazer.

The PJSD’s are working very well on defense and offense and the pack blockers did a very good job picking off the opposing blockers to pave the way for their incoming jammers. Every team should follow their lead because it made a huge difference on the score board.

Going back to the 2008 OSDA Championships to now, Man’s Ruin has to be the most improved team in the league. It’s a real pleasure to watch them skate together as a cohesive team and their hard work is very evident.

The next date in Mt. Laurel is November 21st and will feature 3 games. The first two games will be 2-15 minute periods and the fans will select which teams skate each other. The winners of games 1 and 2 will face each other in the championship game which will consist of 4 – 15 minute periods.

Good Luck to everyone!

An Original Roller Derby Girl

Judy Sowinski

The sport of roller derby is getting a lot of attention this fall with the new movie, Whip It.

Roller derby has a proud history as an American sport that’s been played since the 1920s. It’s one of the few high-powered contacts sports that put women in the spotlight.

Judy Sowinski, also known as the Polish Ace, coaches the Penn-Jersey She-Devils in Philadelphia. But Judy had her own storied career in roller derby in the 60’s when she was known as the Polish Ace. She joins Dick to talk about the sport then and now.

* See Judy with her current team, the Penn-Jersey She-Devils.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 20 2009

It is with great pleasure that I welcome to the OSDA our latest league, Chesapeake Roller Derby. Still in the organizational stages with their first season planned to begin in January of 2010, this organization already numbers over 30 people and is growing larger everyday. Skating out of the Baltimore area (Westminster, MD), the league has already acquired a Charity Partner, the American Breast Cancer Foundation, for its opening season plus an incredible facility, Shipley Arena, for its games. Run by Brandy Tomhave and her husband Jeff, I anticipate great things for this league. The OSDA is proud to have them aboard.

It is with further pleasure that I announce Brandy’s addition to the OSDA Executive Board as Co-Director of Events Planning. She will be joining Liz Lazenby in this position. Due to Brandy’s extensive business knowledge as a partner in Black Eyed Susan Skate Shop and her time on the track skating with Charm City in her alter ego of “Marzipain”, the OSDA feels honored to have her accept this position. We feel there can be no better choice to help develop OSDA’s major events for 2010.

One needs only spend a few minutes talking with Brandy and Jeff to realize their love for the “simple game” of Roller Derby. Their faith in the OSDA and their intensity in wanting to do it the “old school” way are incredible. They are sure to spread the cause of OSDA where ever they go. Once again, please join me in welcoming Chesapeake Roller Derby to the OSDA.

The OSDA proudly announces the first ever Co-Ed Roller Derby Tournament to determine its top 2009 National Championship Co-Ed team. Teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Richmond will compete for the title named for the legendary Atkinson family.

As one of the leading families in all permutations of Roller Derby to RollerJam, the Atkinson Family has contributed much to this sport. It is our intention to honor them for their contributions.

There are two other major awards that will be given, the Female OSDA MVP will receive the Judy Arnold MVP Award. Many consider Judy Arnold the greatest women’s Roller Derby skater to ever grace the banked oval.

She began skating in 1960 and her career quickly began to soar. Judy Arnold soon became the captain of the Philadelphia Warriors in 1967, where she remained until she retired in 1975.

The Male OSDA MVP will receive the Arnold Schoen MVP Award. Although the demise of the Banked Track cut short his career, to us in the OSDA, he is every bit a superstar. We hope that he will be as honored by this tribute as we are to have him associated with OSDA.

Arnold Schoen will be present that night to present the award. These games will involve both male and female skaters skating on the track together. Members of these teams will be made up of skaters from OSDA leagues, Man’s Ruin Rollergirls (Chester, NY), Richmond Derby Demons (Richmond, VA), South Jersey Derby and the Penn Jersey She Devils.

The Old School Derby Association (OSDA) was officially founded in March of 2007 by Ken Sikes with the help of the Penn Jersey She Devils Roller Derby League and their coaches, Judy Sowinski and Arnold ‘Skip’ Schoen. OSDA combines the most thrilling aspects of both old and modern rulesets to create a fast-moving, ultra-defensive game.

The OSDA currently has member leagues in PA, NJ, NY, MD, VA, and AZ and is constantly growing. It is the goal of the OSDA to once again show the beauty of a game that has kept Derby fans Derby fans for years.
