OSDA PRO announces Dress Code for Training School opening September 18, 2010

August 26, 2010- Philadelphia, PA.

The OSDA PRO Executive Board and Training School Directors have concluded discussions regarding appropriate protective clothing and safety gear policies to be followed by all Training School Rookies.

HELMETS- Approved Helmets are required for skating on the Banked Track.

ELBOW AND KNEE PADS – Most skaters who join the Training School program will already have some sort of safety pads. While HARD CAPS will be allowed, it is preferred that no hard caps be used during training. They are not necessary for proper falling on the banked track and can cause additional injury to skaters and damage to the track. If possible, Rookies should arrange to remove any hard caps from both their elbow and kneepads.

ADDITIONAL PADDING – Tailbone, hip and other types of protective pads are allowed (but not required) for the comfort and safety of Rookie skaters.

WRIST GUARDS – Wrist Guards should not be worn during Banked Track training. Wrist Guards do not allow proper movement to grab a top rail to prevent falling from the track. There is also a high possibility of injuring another skater with a rigid wrist guard.

MOUTH GUARD – A mouth guard may be used at the discretion of the individual skater, but is not required for Banked Track Training.

CLOTHING – Training on the Banked Track will be rigorous and demanding. There will be falls, both intentional and unintentional. Repeated falls on the Banked Track can result in assorted skin abrasions commonly known in Roller Derby as “track rash”. Any skin injury can result in serious infection, especially if exposed to subsequent falls on a track that has had many skates and skaters on it.

Reducing the incidence of track rash and subsequent medical complications to Rookies is a primary concern of the OSDA PRO.

While it is preferred that Rookies be covered from wrist to ankle (long sleeves and pants) during training, OSDA PRO requires Rookies to have minimum coverage from the top of the elbow pads to the top of the knee pads (3/4 length coverage).

Ideally, sleeves should be held in place by elbow pads and pant legs should be held in place by kneepads in such a way as to prevent them from rolling up to expose unprotected skin.

Again, the safety and health of the Rookies in the OSDA PRO Training School is of primary concern to this organization. Any questions or concerns regarding the Training School requirements regarding safety may be directed to the Training School Directors: (Aktiviere JavaScript, um die Email-Adresse zu sehen)

As fans and skaters worldwide celebrate Roller Derby’s 75th Anniversary of its first game today, OSDA joins all in paying homage to Leo Seltzer, his original Roller Derby and its Skaters. From our inception in 2007, the OSDA has looked to the past to create the future of the sport we love. The OSDA Mission Statement says it all; “It is the goal of OSDA and its members to restore ties with “Old School” skaters, trainers and coaches from past decades and learn from their experiences and input.”

OSDA is very proud to follow the example of Leo Seltzer, who created and developed the only sport that allows men and women to compete by the same rules on the same track. Leo’s Roller Derby has seen many incarnations since the 1930′s.

Over the past three years, the OSDA has been proud to offer an alternative to the currently popular and fast-growing all-female flat track Roller Derby game. The OSDA allows member leagues to choose to play flat or banked track games with any combination of all female, male or co-ed teams in addition to the traditional Old School style game.

In January of this year one of OSDA’s founding leagues, Philadelphia’s Penn Jersey Roller Derby, made the commitment of setting up a Banked Track. With this addition, the OSDA has taken the opportunity to create a new division specifically focused on training skaters on the Banked Track in the Traditional Roller Derby game.

The OSDA PRO Division Banked Track Training School will open its doors to the public in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 18, 2010. The Training School will be open to all skaters with the desire to train in the traditional Old School style of Banked Track Roller Derby.

OSDA PRO believes in Leo’s steadfast insistence that TRAINING of the skaters is the most important part of Roller Derby game. Only professionally trained skaters have the endurance and stamina it takes to skate the caliber of game presented when the sport of Roller Derby first swept the nation and the world.

To accomplish a professional standard, OSDA PRO has retained the services of retired pro skaters Judy Sowinski and Arnold “Skip” Schoen.

Judy Sowinski (aka “The Polish Ace”) has had a long and colorful professional Roller Derby skating career that stretches from 1959 to 1992. She is a deserving member of the Roller Derby Hall of Fame and has coached and trained for Penn Jersey Roller Derby since its inception.

Skip Schoen’s introduction to Roller Derby began in 1968 while skating for the Eastern Warriors and continued until 1992. During his career, Skip skated for the Detroit Devils, the New York Bombers, Western Renegades and the Canadian Braves. He is best known for his run with the Warriors where he skated from 1968 thru 1973.

With Judy and Skip as the OSDA PRO Training School Directors, OSDA PRO is excited about the future possibilities of presenting some truly worthy Roller Derby Teams. Our ultimate goal is to have a sufficient number of skaters trained and game ready to begin to form teams in 2012.

We think Leo would be proud.

Happy Birthday to Judy Sowinski!

Sunday July 18, 2010 Game!

The new crop of rookies showed their talents on Saturday, June 12th at the International Sports Center in Mt. Laurel, NJ.

The home team Juvenile Delinquents faced the Lil’ Devils. The home team defeated the visitors by a score of 45-34 and lead throughout the entire game.

Scoring for the winning Juvenile Delinquents were Kelly Kapowski with a game-high 14 points, Maulin’ Munster with11 points, Roxanne Mudd with 8 points, captain Tasteskate with 7 points and Anna Trocity with 5 points. Scoring for the Lil’ Devils were Lil Debbie Smacks with 13 points, captain Honey Bee with 11 points, Bruise Suede Shooze with 9 points and Edith Brainz with 1 point. Every one of these jammers skated hard with a great amount of tenacity and talent.

The Delinquents and Devils both had girls who weren’t afraid of adding some color to the game. The Delinquents’ Anna Trocity and the Devils’ Lil Debbie Smacks played to the crowd and backed up their smack talkin’ with talent., which not only added interest to the game, it helped motivate their teammates.

On the defensive side, kudos go out to Beatrix R. Forkids who has amazing talent after only a 3 month rookie training program. This program was very effectively run by Penn Jersey veterans’ Classy Chassis and La-T-Bug. Great job ladies!

As always, there were some rookie mistakes, i.e. not looking behind to see the opposing jammer, and a pack that’s not tight or is moving too fast, but these are things they will learn as their skills advance.

Penn Jersey has a great group of new rookies, several of which will be on teams in no time.

The next game in Mt. Laurel will be on Saturday, July 17th, featuring the Sadistic Sweethearts vs. Dishonor Roll and is called Roller Derby Girl Scout Day. For more information, check www.pennjerseyrollerderby.com or contact Penn Jersey’s Cloberella at Cloberella9 yahoo.com
