More Fun than Disneyland!
Current mood: animated

Finally have a few minutes to post and say how much fun I had at
the “Has-Beens” reunion this past week in Laughlin! I arrived Sunday grabbed a rental car and reported to Loretta and Phil’s house for lunch and shuttle duty.
Was so happy to meet everyone there, and I started collecting hugs from
everyone who was game for one.

Loretta and Phil had quite the spread, platters of yummies and
sodas & drinks for all. It was so nice after traveling to be able to
visit, munch a little and catch a breather before everyone headed south to Laughlin.

It was my sincere pleasure to share the ride to Laughlin with
Gloria and Billy Gardner. I don’t think Gloria and I let Billy get more
than a couple of words in edge-wise during the trip. The 90 minutes flew
by as Gloria shared so many fun stories and had a lot of great
ideas and tidbits that will help me when I get my track set up.

From the moment I hit the hotel I was determined to get every bit
of fun I could squeeze out of the trip. If I missed speaking to
anyone, I can’t think of who it was! Loretta made sure I got to cross paths
with everyone and I can’t thank the skaters who were kind enough to
agree to sign my helmet for the OSDA.

Had a blast with Charlie Goodwin, Skip, Janet and Georgia when we
snuck back to Vegas on Monday to skate on Lali’s track. Man, it was
hot but couldn’t pass it up …yes, I fell a couple of times but Skip
(friend that he is) fell to make me feel better and even got a
little souvenir…his first rink rash in 25 (?) years!

Lali O and her husband Pat were kind enough to bring their pro
Karoke set-up and host a show for us. I sang La Bamba and Harper Valley
PTA for everyone at Karaoke night and topped the night singing The Rose
with none other than Mz. Georgia Hase! I think everyone had
waaaayyyy too much fun with the cucumbers…Dan Ferrari was a great sport and joined in (my team lost! Darn!) I’m still doctoring my nose from
getting stabbed with a toothpick passing the Lifesaver (haha) and I
ended up with coffee creamer in my bag when what I really wanted
was DJ’s green bath mitt! I can’t wait to see that picture!

I really clicked with my Paisanos Joe Canevari and Gootch Gautieri,
(they give great hugs!) and I’ll always remember Loretta’s dance
with Jackie Gleason…I couldn’t resist dancing with him too, but I wasn’t
quite as brazen as Little Iodine! All the camera’s came out as Billy Bogash Watusied with Lali O’s daughter…and Marc Stern had everyone
on the floor for the Electric Slide FOUR times…(you’re a great
teacher, Marc) Gloria swears she’s gonna have it down by next reunion! (No,
really, Gloria SWEARS! hahahahaha)
The Banquet was WONDERFUL! My favorite has always been Turkey, and
they also had a delicious Pork Loin- with all the fixin’s…the food
was absolutely delicious! Everyone enjoyed their dinner and then we
had the distinct pleasure of being present as Gary presented Jean
Porter her Hall Of Fame plaque. There were a few tears as Dee
Morrissey accepted Bill’s Hall of Fame plaque. There were a lot of
tears as Bonnie Nelson presented a most heartfelt tribute to her
Captain and Mentor, Mary Youpell.

During my trip I FINALLY got to meet John Hall and his lovely wife
Debbie, Pastor Kirk, Loretta & Phil, Bonnie and so many other old
friends from online for the first time. To all the wonderful
skaters
and family who came to see their friends at this reunion and were
kind enough to extend their welcome to me; many thanks. It was
heartwarming and I truly feel blessed to have had the chance to get
to know you.

I have to say how sorry I was that Nellie Wilson, who put so much
time and effort into this event, spent the entire reunion extremely
ill and was even taken to the hospital. I hope she is feeling
better.

And I can’t say enough for her “assistants” who jumped right in and
ran the event for her and all of us. They manned the raffle table,
did all the check in, made sure everyone knew what was going on and
where to be when, had all the answers and kept everything running.
Dyno and the other ladies who sat at those tables all that time to
make this go, you have my undying gratitude!

Cookie, Julie, Whirly, Sue…y’all just plain crack me up!
So many other memories, but hopefully this is enough to share what
an unbelievable time it was!

Hope to see pictures soon…I was too busy having fun to even pull
out my camera!

Open their Interleague Season

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: sjderbygirls@yahoo.com
Phone: (484) 483-0619

Deptford — South Jersey Derby, a co-ed roller derby league featuring fierce local men and women are at it again, Saturday, May 17, at the Deptford Skating Center in Westville.

Bringing the derby revival to area fans, two interleague teams, the Big Rigs, sponsored by local trucking company J.W. Transportation, and the Rollin Barren Bandits, go skate-to-skate in the Red, White & Bruise.

Kickstarting the 2008 season, each team will feature seven of the area’s toughest skaters, including a Buena mother and son, and two Mullica Hill sisters — all on opposite teams.

The game will consist of two, 30-minute periods, and will feature live music and entertainment at half-time.

A tailgating party featuring local band, Cheezy and the Crackers, will start outside the rink at 5 PM. Doors to the event open at 7 PM, with the game starting at 7:30.

Be sure to follow the team to O’Malley’s in Gloucester City for an after-game celebration.

Part of the Old School Derby Association (OSDA), SJD is quickly gaining a reputation for hard-hitting blockers, and fast-dodging jammers. Their game is a fast-paced, no theatrics wallop.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door; kids 6 and under are half price. Tickets are available online at www.sjderbygirls.com/events.html

—

South Jersey Derby was established in March 2007 with the hopes of bringing the thrill and excitement of this classic game to South Jersey while promoting sportsmanship and community involvement. SJD has received much attention from local media, including the Courier Post and the Atlantic City Press. In just over one year, it has seen growth from just two women skating together at the Washington Lake Park to its current size of more than 30 skaters.

What a day at the ‘Has Beens’ reunion. Our dear fearless leader, Nellie Montague Wilson,
was taken back to the hospital. She’s been fighting an infection and hasn’t been feeling
well and yes, the hospital is the best place for Nell, but we’ll miss her smiling face.

Saw lots of friends this morning at breakfast. Met KEN HANSEN, which was great. Saw
HAL JANOWITZ, NORMA ROSSNER, BARBARA O’LEARY, SUE FREGULIA, ‘Cookie’ KADYRA, 50s
skater (and sweetheart) BOBBIE BURNS, JEAN PORTER, BERT WALL, BOBBIE MATEER, DEE
MORRISSEY, DELORES DOSS plus so many others. Sat between JUDY ARNOLD & JULIE
PATRICK and had a little food following by raffle drawings.

Spent part of the afternoon by the pool with JUDY ARNOLD, GAIL FUND, JOE CANEVARI,
NORMA ROSSNER, ARNOLD ‘Skip’ SCHOEN and ROSE COLUMBO, then headed to the outlet
stores for a little shopping. On the way out of the hotel, ran into SHERRI ERICH, RUBERTA
MITCHELL, DARLENE ANDERSON & JAN VALLOW who were just arriving. Saw JOHN HALL in
the casino. JUDY SOWINSKI & SHEILA McKENNA & DEE WILSON who spent part of the day
on the river in a boat.

After Marc Stern and I had dinner with Judy Arnold, tonight was ‘Karioke Night’ in the
‘Hospitality Room’ where lots of people got up and sang. MAUREEN O’BRIEN arrived.
FRANK MACEDO was there. LANA KASANOVICH and GENIE PACE. ‘Big Sister’ BARBARA
BAKER finally got to Laughlin and we spent a long time catching up. Later saw ANNIS ‘Big
Red’ JENSEN with MARY YOUPELLE. DOLLY HANSEN was there, too. Plus Derby’s rarest
‘Has Been,’ BILLY BOGASH, who in his 90s, was still cutting up a rug on the dance floor
with wife, GEORGIA. LARRY LEE was spotted and I had the distinct privilege of meeting
Miss GEORGIA HASE, who’s an absolute delight!

I also got to meet our own BONNIE NELSON & CANDY JONES & NONNIE, the Australian
sweetie, plus NANCY SHEEHAN! And yes, BARBARA BAKER, ‘Cookie’ KADYRA, SUE
FREGULIA, SKIP SCHOEN, MARC STERN and me closed the joint where we heard one
phenomenal memory after another. It’s been like a master class in Derby history all night.

And yes, it’s late and I’ve probably forgotten a few things and names and people…. but
just want to share a taste of this wonderful reunion with everyone.
Gary P.

April 14, 2001
By Gary Powers

Seven years ago today legendary skater RONNIE ROBINSON left us.

Sugar Ray’s son was trained by GERRY MURRAY, learned his craft from the best of them, impressing everyone with his jamming skills, then startled the banked track kingdom by leading the NEW ENGLAND BRAVES to the ‘68 pennant and ‘69 world title. Ronnie was one of those skaters who could do it all. If Robinson was in the game, you knew it would be good. He could do it all with style and grace and humility. He put the sport and fans before his own personal glory, the true mark of a Hall-of-Famer.

Although I will always admire Ronnie for his greatness on the banked track, I also learned something valuable from him. After I met him in 2000 at a party for Calvello’s DEMON OF THE DERBY, I was too intimidated to return his calls or pick up the phone and see how he was doing? I mean, he was RONNIE ROBINSON!!!

When he left us too quickly and I went to his funeral in the Bronx, I realized it would have taken sooooo little effort to pick up the phone or drive to the Bronx and take him to dinner. Very little effort on my part and it would have meant a lot to him! It would have added to the quality of his life and what was stopping me??? My own silly fear? I decided then and there to not do that again. Now was the time. No more excuses. No more being afraid. Reaching out, making the connection, giving back. About acknowledging skaters and celebrating the impact they made upon fans. That’s been the framework of all we’ve tried to accomplish over the past eight years with Roller Derby Foundation.

Ronnie Robinson is still loved and missed by everyone who came into his orbit. He will always be one of the great stars of the game. Thanks for the memories, sweet prince of the banked track.
Gary P.

The press loves controversy. I had a member of the press try and revitalize an old feud here in the Philly area. When I let them know that was old past history and something I wasn’t going to focus on, the story never made the paper. I’ve tried to educate my local girls that the press will try and guide the story where they want it to go and it’s their job to not allow that. I think that is something we all need to keep in mind regardless of organization affiliation.

As Founder & President of the OSDA, I’d like to say that Tim is correct. We are proud of the co-operative relationship we are developing with WFTDA. I’d like to assume that a lot of the crap being slung in this article was promoted by the press who always love to promote a competition or controversy. In any case, I will be speaking to Navy City and deciding if
any type of action should be taken. Thanks to those here who understand what the press is capable of doing.

This time of year provides lots of birthdays and I wanted to put out wishes to all…

CHYANN CANTALL, great-granddaughter of GERRY MURRAY, granddaughter of MIKE, JUDI
& CHARLIE, daughter of SHARI, sister of DARNE, turned 17 on April 3. She’s Roller Derby
royalty thru-and-thru and drop-dead gorgeous to boot!

Super fan, GARY BROWN, celebrated a birthday April 4. He’s Michigan’s greatest fan and
has been a terrific supporter of all we do at RDF, showing up to show his admiration for
the sport’s greatest stars at celebrations for Gerry Murray in Des Moines and for Derby’s
70th anniversary celebration in Chicago back in 2005. You’re the best, Gar!

NELLIE (Montague) WILSON also celebrated a birthday, April 4. Besides being a terrific
performer on the banked track for many years (Nellie seemed to always be on the L.A.
Braves), she is THE driving force behind the ‘Has Beens’ reunion every year in Laughlin.
Her personality and charm throughout the year makes sure that everyone feels welcomed
and loved. There’s no one better than Nell! And Nellie’s late husband, JACK WILSON, was
born April 7. After the passing of JOHNNY & MILLIE ROSASCO, Jack was the one who made
sure the ‘Has Beens’ newsletter continued to be filled with news about the skating family.
He spent many hours on the phone speaking with his former colleagues, was loved and is
missed by many.

GLORIA BRENDT skated with the Philadelphia Panthers back in the 40s & 50s, alongside
Bobbie Johnstone, Ann Calvello, Delores Doss, Terri Anderson, Gloria McAuliffe and Ann
Penderghast, when she was a teenager and is still one of the classiest ladies you’ll ever
come across. Gloria celebrated a birthday April 6, the same day that would have been
ROGER SCHROEDER’s birthday.

Former Bay Bomber coach, BILL ‘Three Fingers’ LAURINO, celebrated a birthday April 7, too!
This Chicago native still roots for his beloved Bears out in the Bay Area where he lives with
wife, Joanne. The Laurinos used to live in an apartment above Calvello in San Bruno, so
there was always a lot of laughter and remembrances whenever these banked track greats
got together. Happy Birthday, Bill! The fans still love you!

And April 5 would have been LEO SELTZER’s 105th birthday. All things came from the
inspiration and mind of this Seattle-born, Chicago-based promoter. No one perservered
more for the success of the sport than Leo. Skaters and fans the world over continue to
celebrate all he brought forth with his banked track creation. No one would have been
more gratified by this Forum and our remembrances than Leo.

First of all, let’s recap March’s intense season opener, the Shamrock Shakedown between the Sadistic Sweethearts and the Dishonor Roll. The Sweethearts came out triumphant 49-23 over the Dishonor Roll, but trust me, it was no easy road to victory. Both teams had a number of rookies skating in their first league match-up, myself included. I thought of many of us as feral beasts trying to claw through the pack in any way possible, leading to multiple visits to the penalty box and 2 girl-fights that stopped play entirely! The refs had their work cut out for them, but rest assured, they only awarded legitimately earned points! I definitely saw members from the Fallen Angels watching closely and taking notes for April’s game. Check our website for stats and pictures from the Shakedown. www.shedevilsrollerderby.com/Media.html

If you didn’t attend the Shakedown, PJSD’s Spring BREAK ’08 between the Dishonor Roll and the Fallen Angels, is a must-see! The Dishonor Roll is sure to be fierce as they battle back after March’s game and they may even change up their strategy to throw the Angels a curveball. The other thing to look for at our April game is the gang from Ride For Dime Philly. Ride For Dime (RFD) is an annual charity ride and concert in memory of musician Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott, along with Jeff Thompson, Nathan Bray, and Erin Halk. www.ridefordime.com The proceeds from Spring BREAK’s 50/50 will go to RFD and they will be in attendance to talk about their big concert coming up to benefit Little Kids Rock. www.littlekidsrock.org All this and more will go down on Saturday, April 26th at the International Sports, Skating, and Fun Centre in Mount Laurel, NJ. Doors at 7:30pm, get there early for the best rink-side seating! www.intsports.com/mtl

To prep for April’s showdown, come visit us at Philly’s Tattoo Arts Convention from April 18-20th at the Sheraton Philadelphia City Center Hotel. Tattoos are to roller derby what cookies are to milk! Get inked from some of the area’s most talented artists and say hi to your favorite She-Devils while you’re at it! We’ll have tickets for the game, merch, tattoos to show off, and a healthy dose of sass. www.tattooedkingpin.com/philly2008.html

Finally, while you’re marking your calenders, save Friday, May 2nd. The She-Devils are pairing up with the party planners of Emerge to celebrate the Equality Forum www.equalityforum.com and benefit the Sapphire Fund www.sapphirefund.org! This year’s Emerge party is set to be the biggest yet with a whole line-up of bands, DJ Cozmic Cat, and even comedienne Marga Gomez! The party goes from 9pm-3am at Transit Nightclub, 600 Spring Garden, Philadelphia. Purchase tickets at http://emerge.sapphirefund.org

Now that your April is all planned out, call up your friends, brag a little, then be kind and invite your friends along! I, personally, can’t wait to see all you fine people out!

Sincerely,
Tuffy Muffy #5

P.S. If you’d like to request a She-Devils presence at your event, simply contact us with information about your event, the date, and the time. We’d be happy to show up and work the crowd at your happy hour, dance party, gig, business luncheon, inaugural address, etc. events@shedevilsrollerderby.com

Questions? Comments? Concerns? How can we better serve you?

I just got home from the after party and had an excellent time at the game in Mt. Laurel between the Sadistic Sweethearts and Dishonor Roll. The Sweethearts won the game handily — 49-23, and the one thing I noticed, that was lacking in the October game was defense. Tonight they were blocking all over the place.

I have to tell you all, that it is an absolute pleasure to know all of you. First it was a thrill for me to meet Judy and Skip, and I’ll admit to still be a bit star-struck. Sorry, Judy! I promise to work on that. lol Now, I’ve grown to really love these girls. I had the best time watching Cherry Bomber jamming against Classy Chassis and who how can’t you love the blocking of Lucky Luciano and Hard Licker and the tenacity of Miss Chievous, Mohammed Mollie, Stigmata Stain, Sham Pain and Tougie Muffy, just to name a few?

Thanks to Binky for our pins, which my son Matt and I wore proudly through the game and even to the after party.

Thanks to Gary Powers for being a good friend and fun guy.

Thanks to Skip, Judy and Angie for the great company and conversation. Next month, look out, it won’t be the night before Easter and we’ll be ready to party hardy.

Oh, and by the way, we loved the 1/2 time show. Those dancers were very talented young ladies. Like I said to Judy, Tim and Gary, this was SO MUCH better than a penalty wheel! lol

See ya all next month!

Morristown Game Recap

81-103

Last night the Morristown Madams won their Season Opener the Spring Sting. After being plagued by losses in their innagural season, they triumphed over the South Jersey High Voltage Hotties 103-81. The score was with in 1 point of each other for nearly the entire game with the Hotties and Madams alternating the lead until Hotties jammer Mos Deathly found her self in the penalty box, and Madams new commer Mega Menace scored a record 11 points in one jam. This very agressive, hard hitting game was plagued with injuries, both minor and major. Both the Madams and Hotties kept the Morristown Ambulance Squad extremely busy. In the final minutes of the game, Sophia Low Rent of the Madams took a terrible spill which resulted in a broken ankle and a trip to Morristown Memorial. Just moments later Crashn’ Dash of the Hotties was also tripped up with a knee injury, luckily she was able to walk off the rink.

A portion of the proceeds from this game will be donated to Eleventh Hour Rescue a volunteer animal recue organization that saves dogs from death row.

The Day the Skating Almost Stopped
by John Seylaz

It was approximately 11:00 in St. Louis on that March 24, 1937 morning. A group of people that skated for the infant of sports, Roller Derby, climbed into the bus that was to take the group to Cincinnati for a two-week stop. The sport had been invented only a year and a half earlier by Leo Seltzer in Chicago. Its popularity had grown to make it a traveling show. On this morning, the fourteen skaters and nine other Derby personnel piled into the two year old Greyhound bus.

There were plenty of stories on that bus. We can only imagine what was happening. Maybe Erma Caldwell, the 34 year-old mother from Chicago was playing a game with her 4 year-old daughter Carol Ann. Maybe the bus driver, Dick Thomas, only 24, was talking to 19 year-old skater and wife of two weeks, Emily Thomas who was seated right behind him. Maybe Frank Vining and John Britton, both 26, were talking about the concession sales they made in St. Louis and were expecting in Cincinnati. Don Flannery, the 18 year-old skater, may have been discussing the future with his fiancée, skater Ruth Hill. She was 19. Joe Kleats, referred to as the “veteran,” only because he was 36 years-old may have been showing the ropes to Johnny “Schoolboy” Creekmore, the youngest skater listed at 17 but probably was more like 15 or 16. Maybe at 12:49 that morning little Carol Ann spoke with the enthusiasm of a little child pointing out the window at the upcoming bridge. We will never know
exactly what was happening.

We do know that 70 miles east of St. Louis, one and one-quarter miles outside of Salem, Illinois on Highway 50, that bus headed toward Cincinnati suffered a terrible disaster. Approximately 75 feet before reaching the bridge, the bus, which was only going about 40 miles an hour, endured a front right tire blowout. As Dick Thomas wrestled with the steering wheel to try and maintain control, the bus flipped onto its side and skidded along the bridge, eventually hitting a concrete abutment and bursting into flames. It was recalled that the gas tanks were severed and gas was flying everywhere. Dick Thomas tried to make his way out through the broken windshield but could not find his way. Eventually, he climbed out of the side window. He then pulled wife Ruth out who had been just behind him. At the hospital he was quoted, “I pulled another girl out, and then the flames hit me and blinded me. My wife helped me walk down the road. People outside the bus were screaming but it didn’t seem that any of those in the bus were screaming.”

Don Flannery was also a survivor who could speak. “She (Ruth) called me twice. I was feeling around for her. Didn’t see her. Found her and tried to pull her out through the window. She was pinned under baggage and seats. It was so hot I had to crawl out. I walked up the road. Help came and took me here. I did everything I could,” he ended with a sob. “I tried to save Ruth.”

Eighteen people died immediately in the crash. Five were brought to hospitals. Later that night, Emily Thomas, the wife of the bus driver passed away of severe burns. It has been quoted as being said that Ted Mullen, the 25 year-old announcer, also severely burned, whispered to doctors, “Do you think I’ll ever be able to skate?” When the doctor assured him he would, he responded, “Funny. I was never able to skate before.” Ted also died that evening. One month later, John “Schoolboy” Creekmore passed. The doctors valiantly tried with transfusions and the like but Creekmore was too badly injured.

Twenty-three people boarded that bus on the fateful morning of March 24, 1937. Only Don Flannery, who later rejoined the Derby and Dick Thomas, the bus driver, survived. It almost ended the “babe of sport” only a year and a half into its existence, but popularity demanded it continue and the skaters pressed on into what was a nice run.

In memory of the victims, the number “1″ that was worn by Joe Kleats was retired and never worn again in Leo or, later, Jerry Seltzer’s Roller Derby. I wrote that story so that these pioneers of the sport could be remembered and honored.
