Code of Conduct
Code of Conduct
It is the responsibility of the individual member Leagues duly appointed representative to monitor, advise and review the OSDA Code of Conduct with their respective League members.
1. OSDA policy regarding non-OSDA skaters, teams and leagues:
- It is the goal of OSDA to promote a mutually beneficial support of not only OSDA member leagues, but all skaters, teams and leagues, regardless of their affiliation; past, present or future.
- OSDA Leagues should refrain from comparing themselves to Other
organizations in/on publicly accessible media (Newspaper, internet, radio, etc.) in such a way as to portray OSDA as being “superior” in skill, style, organization or individual.
2. Internal Conflicts
Any OSDA league, team or individual is encouraged to make use of the OSDA Board members to help resolve any internal conflicts within your organization.
Concerns should be presented in writing by the duly appointed OSDA representative.
OSDA will set up a mediation board & work with you to resolve issues amongst the parties.
Under no circumstances should personal grieveances be posted on any public internet group or forum. What you have to say as an OSDA member reflects on ALL OSDA members. If you have issues within your league or with another league (even a non-OSDA league), please bring it to the Board and we will help you address it in an appropriate manner.
3. Consequences
Should any member, team or league, as an individual or as a whole, be found in violation of this guideline, the OSDA board will take corrective / disciplinary action as follows:
First Offense: Letter of reprimand outlining specific occurrence, explaining why occurrence is not acceptable and suggesting corrective action that offending individual, team or league may take.
Second Offense: Offending individual, team or league will be placed on a 90 day probation. During that time, individual, team or league will not be allowed to represent themselves as being an active OSDA league and will not be eligible to vote on any OSDA business.
Third Offense: Offending individual, team or league will have their OSDA membership privileges revoked and will be banned from the OSDA.
- Appeals
Former OSDA members, teams or leagues who have been banned from membership may file a written appeal to the OSDA Board for consideration. Appeals must be submitted to the OSDA Board President, and expulsion may be rescinded by a majority vote of the OSDA Executive Board.
Thanks for your cooperation in building a positive image for the OSDA. If you have any suggestions on the things you think we should stress in our contacts with the press, etc, please feel free to post on the OSDA member Yahoo Group or e-mail any board member. Working together, we can continue to make OSDA grow and prosper.
FAQ
If you are an OSDA member league or team do you have to play only by OSDA rules?
No. You can play by any ruleset you like, the only caveat being that only games played by OSDA rules with certified referees will be ranked for official rankings and tournament placement.
If you are not an OSDA member league or team can you play by OSDA rules?
Sure! Be our guest. Give them a try and see how you like them. There are OSDA member leagues that will scrimmage you or help you try those rules out.
Why don’t you call your games bouts?
Games have always been called games in Roller Derby since the 1930s, so we’ll stick with that.
Why don’t you “Pass the Star”?
The OSDA skates a game with rules taken from the Roller Derby Banked Track rules. Passing the star was never done in Roller Derby, Banked Track games. The Pivot was always permitted to go out on a jam once the opposing teams/or the Pivot’s own jammer started the jam. They did so without having to pass the star,or in the banked track game, exchange their helmets, as they did not wear covers over their helmets. It is the OSDA’s belief that this adds to a more defensive game, because now you have two positions that are possible scoring players. This leads to having to have the Pivots keep a good eye and check on each other to keep one another from breaking out of the pack to score. The OSDA just feels it is more along the lines of they way “Old School Roller Derby” was played.
When does the Pivot Becomes Lead Jammer?
There is no set distance a Pivot must be out of the pack to become a jammer. Just as there is no set distance the trailing/secondary jammer may become the “Lead Jammer”. For the Pivot, it is once he/she breaks from the pack, ie, one stride from the pack and he/she can be a Jammer once that opposing Jammer has broken from the pack. If they are “dumped”,sorry old school term, blocked fall down or are knocked out of bounds, they would still be concidered a Jammer. Even if they are caught up to within the 20 foot distance in front of the pack, slowed down enough for the pack to catch
up to them and then he/she is returned to the pack, they would still have been concidered a Jammer.
For the secondary Jammer to over Lead Jammer status, all that jammer must be is passed the Lead Jammer. It could be one stride, one hip, a shoulder ahead. For my part, I don’t change Lead Jammer status unless it is one stride ahead of the skater. Lead changes are usually very fast on a jam, as our jammers are encouraged to block each other while on a Jam since they have everything to gain by being Lead Jammer. In the pack while both are scoring points, then I go with the shoulder, hip and even skate if it’s close…more a judgement call, which I think it still would be if a set distance was in place. It could/would lead to a number of arguements, “he/she wasn’t 5 feet in front of the jammer”,”my team’s jammer was still Lead Jammer” etc. That’s why I let the Jammer referee who has lead Jammer stop the jam when their Jammer puts the hands on the hips to call off the jam. Hope that I gave you the answer you were looking for and not confuse you.

Co-Ed Games
When the SheDevils/Hooligans have a co-ed game there is an equal number of men and women on each team. There is however no limit as to how many of each sex from one team are allowed on the track at a time. The SheDevils and Hooligans train together. They skate against each other in our practice times, 5 girls against 5 guys, so when a co-ed game is skated the girls have no problems with the guys being on the track as the same time. Okay, strategy time, you have 30 seconds between jam to field a team of 5 skaters, wait until last seconds to get your team out, just make sure they are on the track and ready to go when the referee blows the whistle to start the jam…..change your jammer last second if the guy/girl on your team is faster than opposing jammer, but still remember, has to be done before the whistle starts the jam or you could be cut short a jammer, then the Pivot has to take the jam once the opposing jammer has broke the pack.

Certification Program

It is with great pleasure that the Old School Derby Association (OSDA) announces the beginning of their Referee Certification Program. This program will be open to all interested in acquiring the skills necessary to referee an OSDA game. The certification will be in three steps:
- Referee Testing: a written exam will be given on the rules. Passing this permits you to work as an outside ref at an OSDA game. The rules are available for download on the official OSDA site at: /requirements/. You will receive an OSDA patch for your referee shirt. You can take the exam online, via phone or Skype.
- Certified Referee Testing: Allows you to build on your Referee Training. After serving on the Referee Staff for three games and getting the signed recommendation of a Certified Ref who served with you on each of those games, you may request OSDA Certified Referee status and move into the infield as a Jammer referee. You will receive a Certified Patch for your uniform.
- Certified Head Referee Testing: The ultimate step. After 6 games under the supervision of a Certified OSDA Head Referee and their signed approval, you may request OSDA Certified Head Referee status. Your name will be added to a database available to all OSDA member leagues of OSDA Certified Head Referees and you will be issued a certificate acknowledging your status.

One Woman’s Story
One woman’s story: You know the feeling you get when you fly in your dreams? I can get that same feeling with my eyes open when I’m skating on a Banked Track.
My mom told me she wanted to be a skater for in the mid fifties…she tried out for the San Diego Clippers team in ‘54, but didn’t make it. Still, she remained a huge fan and never missed a game in that warehouse by the navy base. She said my first trip around the banked track was there when at 5 weeks my mom went to a game with me and handed me up into the arms of a skater. I’ve been a fan for 45 years. Calvello, Weston, Behrens, Brashun, so many more skating stars…I’d fall asleep watching derby on the B&W TV.
Nine siblings and we all went to the rink. It was cheaper than the movies. My first skates were metal and had a key. When everyone else went to inlines, I stubbornly kept my quads.
My daughter has skated Banked Track derby in Austin for 4 years now. I fell in love all over again watching her games. Still, it wasn’t the sport I fell in love with and I missed the old game more than ever. So for me, buying a track and setting up a training school for Roller Derby for me just completes the family circle of grandmother-mother-daughter involved in derby. I want to see the old style games played again.
The physical exertion - the excitement - the high emotions - the sweat and exhaustion - the mental focus - the fulfillment - not unlike any intense activity that gives us a thrill. There’s something about the way the excitement of Roller Derby makes you feel…for some people, Derby IS love!
Watching skaters bout is like watching angels in a tempest. Chaos in motion. Jammers running from the pack only to chase them down again to score. Blockers begrudgingly allowing them through once only for the opportunity to stop them dead in their tracks the next time through.
People who are skating competitively will play Roller Derby as a sport. People who are skating for fun will play it as a game. Some people just love to watch and cheer their favorites on. Some people will just develop an addiction to the way they feel when they skate on the Banked Track.
WARNING! Like anything making you feel that good, derby CAN become addictive. That is probably why those involved are so passionate regarding their defense of the sport…we are all addicts defending our addiction. Once hooked, it becomes much more than just a sport…it becomes a lifestyle and a state of mind.
It can teach you discipline, commitment, loyalty, patience, team work, leadership, goal setting and achievement, self esteem and expose you to people from many walks of life. Not to mention skating burns 600 to 900 calories each hour! And believe me, it is a lot more fun to fall on a Banked Track than it is to hit a hard flat surface.
Roller
Everyone has a different story about their journey; everyone comes to derby from a different path. I have learned (and relearned) so many life lessons from being involved. It’s a grand experiment in social/cultural extremes…and the pot never stops being stirred. It’s always new, exciting and challenging. Roller
That’s what derby is to me. You can’t really experience all that from a distance…why don’t you join us as we bring this monster back to life? And you might want to bring your protective gear…it gets bumpy sometimes!

Mission Statement
The OSDA was created for those who want to skate something more akin to what the original Roller Derby was like. It is the goal of OSDA & its members to restore ties with “Old School” skaters, trainers and coaches from past decades and learn from their experiences and input. It is our belief that there is a huge untapped fan base out there longing for Roller Derby skated in Old School fashion. OSDA feels that by excluding those legendary Old School skaters and patrons, many find they cannot connect enthusiastically to the sport they used to love.
Old School rules were created by melding many of the current developments in Flat Track Derby with the rules used by Old School Banked Track Roller Derby skaters. These rules were developed by the Penn Jersey She Devils through consultation with representatives from Derby teams from the 70s and we believe add to an exciting game for both the fans & the players.
We believe that it is possible to entertain and inspire a crowd with an aggressive, hard-skated Old School game. OSDA believes that the draw was, is and should continue to be The Game. Pure & simple. No gimmicks - just the incredible skill of the skaters.
It is the goal of the OSDA to once again show the beauty of a game that has kept Derby fans Derby fans for years.
